Data Conversions
Data conversion is the process of getting a new system to the exact state in
terms of master, financial and operational data in the legacy system and enabling the data
to go through the business workflow in the new system, as it would in the legacy system.
In a complete ERP implementation, this can be an arduous task.
Challenges
To make the data conversion work, either the legacy technical staff needs to
learn the new system or the new system analysts need to understand the legacy system and
map the data to the new system. Usually this does not happen and it takes well towards the
end of the project when the analysts understand both systems and make last minute changes
to accommodate the mapping. Another challenge is, not understanding the methodology
and the reconciliation process till the end of the project.
Our Approach
Apps Associates has successfully performed data conversions from 1 or 2 object
implementations to a large scale multi-national data conversion with over 20 objects with
data coming in numerous sources. In order to add extreme value to this process, our
consultants will be very inclined to spend time to understand the legacy systems in terms
of data and prior processes. This will facilitate in the data mapping and business flow
discussions at the early stages of the project. With our vast experience in data
conversions, we have time tested methodologies for each of the objects in terms of data
mapping, complete data life cycle testing and reconciliation. For example, for Accounts
Receivable data conversion, we evaluate the needs of the AR staff and nature of the
customer data and give the ramifications of converting the whole history or just open
balances or open balances with the relevant history.
